Rooted in a commitment to local innovation, Maticent operates under the NAICS Code 541500 for Computer Systems Design and Related Services. The company’s flagship project, The Bbala Initiative – One Student, One Computer, aims to bridge the digital divide in Uganda’s higher education system by offering affordable, high-quality laptops to students and teachers through a subscription-based payment model. By assembling devices locally and partnering with institutions to provide tailored tech support and digital literacy training, Maticent not only enhances educational access but also promotes local industry growth, job creation, and sustainable digital transformation in Uganda. Uganda Women’s Effort to Save Orphans (UWESO) is a non-governmental, non-foreign, inter-denominational and non-political development organization (NGO) founded in 1986 by a group of women volunteers who were mobilized and led by the First Lady, Hon. Janet Kataaha Museveni who is the Founder and Patron of the organization. UWESO was initially established as a relief organization to respond to the needs of destitute and disadvantaged children who were orphaned as a result of the civil strife of the early 1980s and the HIV/AIDS pandemic. Over the years, the organization has evolved from providing relief into a broad-based child rights organization, identifying interventions that are strategic for addressing the needs of orphans and Other Vulnerable Children (OVC) nationally. The organisation works in partnership with relevant government agencies, civil society organizations, development partners and the private sector to advance the rights of children. It works directly with communities and children through a cluster approach at community, sub-county and district levels. UWESO’s programmes have evolved and diversified over the period to include: grassroots interventions spearheaded by women members of UWESO; structured district-based interventions with development partners and government at national and local levels. UWESO also works through child-focused networks and coalitions. Since 2007, UWESO has provided technical support to local governments and Civil Society Organization’s (CSOs) in strengthening and scaling up OVC services.
