Hon. Evelyn Anite Officially Launches Maticent Industries Uganda’s First Locally Owned Computer Manufacturing Company, Which Unveiled the One Student, One Computer Initiative Kampala, July 25, 2025 In a landmark ceremony held at Commonwealth Munyonyo Speke Resort, Maticent Industries Ltd was officially launched as Uganda’s first locally owned computer manufacturing, assembling, and digital solutions company. The event also marked the national unveiling of the company’s flagship education program, The Bbala Initiative: One Student, One Computer Campaign, aimed at revolutionising student access to personal computers for learning. The launch attracted a cross-section of stakeholders from government, academia, the private sector, civil society, and development partners. Speaking at the event Hon. Evelyn Anite, the State Minister of Finance for Investment and Privatisation said, "Today is not just the launch of a company, but the birth of a movement to make technology locally made, accessible, and transformational for every Ugandan learner," Hon. Anite thanked Maticent industries for launching the One Student, One Computer Program, noting that Ugandan parents and students may lack the funds to get themselves a personal computer, specifically recognizing the pay later structure that the company is employing which will greatly improve access to computers. “Maticent’s vision aligns with our national goal to integrate technology into every classroom, business, and household,” said the Minister. Eragy Bashonga Alpha, Founder and CEO of Maticent Industries Ltd, noted that, “The Bbala Initiative is our bold response to the digital divide, ensuring every student, regardless of background, has access to a computer.” At the grand reveal and exhibition of Maticent’s locally manufactured computer models, Minister Anite handed over 15 computers to Uganda Women’s Effort to Save Orphans (UWESO) on behalf of Maticent Industries. The computers were handed to the CEO of UWESO, Ms. Jolly Kamugira Kaguhangire, who also gave the Keynote address at the event. In her keynote Address, Kaguhangire noted that “as Uganda takes bold steps toward industrialisation and digital inclusion, Maticent Industries Ltd stands as a shining example of local ingenuity, leadership, and commitment to sustainable development.” The event featured a Mini Summit on “Unlocking Uganda’s Digital Future”, where key leaders debated the future of AI in education, digital skills development, and how to make ICT tools affordable and accessible across the country. Various Speakers, including Brian Mutungi, MTN e-commerce Country Lead, Michael Niyitegeka, Country Manager of Refactory Academy, Sedrick Otolo, Director at Kakebe Technologies Limited, Ali Ziryawulawo from Kira Motors Corporation, Daniel Balaba from Curad Agribusiness Incubator, Cyrus Muwanga, the Founder of GMS schools, Dr. Elizabeth Mary Namakula, a distinguished researcher from Cavendish University, Prof. Gilbert Ocen from Busitema University, and Prof. Augustine Ifelebuegu from Victoria University, who held a lively and informative discussion on the future of education and the economy in light of the current digital landscape.
